12x12: August

I failed and did not make the full twelve shots in August because I thought my roll I started in July was 36 exposures but it was only 24. But here are the six I did get.

lunch at Skihist Thompson Canyon
Jeff and I drive up to Quesnel every year for his dad's birthday, and this year I even drove some! Nearly two hours, from Williams Lake all the way to Quesnel. These photos are from Skihist, a provincial park we usually stop at for a picnic lunch because the view is incredible and also because good restaurants are few and far between.

Vancouver through the mist
Jason, an internet friend/pen pal from Chicago came for a visit. I showed him a couple of good beer and food places and we also drove up to the lookout at Cypress to get a view of the city. Unfortunately the weather wasn't ideal, but the rain & fog created a pretty cool landscape nonetheless.

lunch at Skihist
Jeff & I took our annual drive to Quesnel to visit his dad. This is in Skihist, which we usually stop at for a picnic because a) there's approximately 0 good places to eat along the way, and b) the natural beauty is unreal. A big difference this year was me having my licence, so I drove all the way from Williams Lake to Quesnel on the highway!

[wo]man up
Spent Pride weekend with Liang, of course. We went to Man Up on Friday night; the show was great but we are both old ladies so we left at 1, as soon as it was over, instead of staying to drink & dance. The next morning we woke early, had brunch at Craft, and then spent some time reading in her building's rooftop garden before heading back to the Cobalt for the parking lot pool party. Bo & Su were going to join us, but Bo forgot her ID and they wouldn't let her in! So afterwards we all went for a drink and some food at the Union before heading home.

summer lovin'
Mal & Allie at the July cookoff, in the rooftop garden af Liang's building. This was technically still in week 28 by my rules, but it's such a lovely moment & I don't have anything good from this week, so I don't mind cheating a little.
If you want to see what happened at our southeast Asian cookoff, you can as always check out the blog.

bicycle feet
Liang & I went out to Jericho Beach. She let me drive her car, which, being an automatic, felt a bit like driving a go-kart after learning on Jeff's standard. We had beer & food at the sailing club before heading down to the water. It was still a little cold for swimming, but we had a relaxing afternoon in the shade on the sand, and then stopped for iced tea on the way home. A few more from this day, all with slide film, can be viewed here.

ladies being cute
Bo & Su being adorable at our barbecue. Jeff & I decided that with the free case of wine we won, we just had an outrageously large amount of wine, so we had some friends over to eat food and help us through some. Between 12 of us we managed to polish off 10 bottles! Not bad, friends, not bad.

end-of-summer BBQ
We hosted a barbecue and it was well-attended, delicious, and sunny. Also Jeff and I got to meet our nephew Tyrion for the first time, as Natalie and Seamus had just returned from Korea! He's so big already — only 3 months old and wearing 9 month baby clothes.

five years
It was our five-year anniversary, but of course Jeff had to work. At least we got to have breakfast together (and a nice dinner the day before). Also these are clearly my new favourite pants.

20 August 13

structural integrity
Spent the day at California Adventure, which felt less crowded than the Magic Kingdom the day before. Plus there were more options for older people (both the Matterhorn and Big Thunder Mountain were closed at the other park) and the food is better.
We separated for dinner — Ken & Mom and I had small plates at a wine bar, and the others left the park to go for burgers. We watched the moon rise and after the sun went down we went to stake out our spot for World of Colour. They'd definitely changed some things since I saw it two years ago, and it was amazing. I just wish people would put their videocameras down for a minute and actually enjoy the thing, you know?
See more photos from this day here.

19 August 13

freestyling
Maddie, freestyle drawing in Disneyland. She wasn't even posing; we found her like this.
Michael joined us for our two days in the park; I drove up in the morning with him and Maddie, listening to music and eating snacks. Disneyland is always so much more crowded than I remember it being, and even though Big Thunder Mountain was closed (one of my favourites) we still had a good time, followed up by an excellent dinner at Catal. Exhausted, we walked back to the Holiday Inn, where the shower was crappy but the beds were comfy.
Some more photos from this day here.

land mermaid
Alice and I were super early for our flight, but the flight itself was not too bad. Also it's been awhile since I've flown out of Vancouver and I forgot how nice it is. They have a dispenser at the water fountain just for filling your water bottle with delicious tap water! Mom & Jimm picked us up at John Wayne Airport in Orange County, and unfortunately we got stuck in rush hour traffic so it over two hours to get back to San Diego.

We went down to the water and had a gleeful time watching the dogs play on the beach, and afterwards we were joined by Maddie & Michael, and went to a fantastic sushi/tapas bar called The Joint.
Couple more photos from this day here.

DSC_0025
This is the only picture I took all day and it is terrible because I was very self-conscious with all Tony's lawyer friends in the yard. His birthday bbq was pretty great though; plenty of good food, and I spent most of the time keeping things tidy and making drinks for people. After everyone left, Jeff, Tony, Joanne, & I tasted all the fancy sakes we'd bought that people mostly ignored.

Got a sunburn during the 20-30 minutes I had my shirt off at the beach, because I neglected to get someone to help me sunscreen my back. DAMN YOU NORTHERN BLOOD!

Pride weekend in the Village
Met up with my girl for food, drinks, and company at Tap & Barrel. Afterwards we walked downtown and went for a pitcher of sangria at the Mill, where we said hello to Jeff before heading off to meet her friend Aaron at his apartment downtown. After that I met up with Jeff at the end of his shift and we bussed home together.

white wine spritzer
Wound up at the Mill again, having dinner with my parents and Alice and Raffi. Also discovered an old friend, Danny, from SFU & my old job at Urban Behavior working there as a server, so he joined us for a drink after his shift.
