21 September 11

breakfast
It's nice when you can drag your ass out of bed early enough for breakfast, rather than eating a granola bar on the bus.

20 September 11

fig tree in ruins
I came home and someone (I believe a relative of our landlord) had been 'gardening' out back... this poor fig tree (which was admittedly in need of a trim) was pruned within an inch of its life, our sage bush had been entirely ripped from the ground, and for some reason all of the empties I was saving to return for refund at the depot had been put out in the alley and (presumably) picked up by hobos. I was seething.

19 September 11

halibut with ricotta gnocchi
Jeff and I went out to dinner with my parents. We attempted to go to Grub on Main St, thinking we wouldn't need a reservation — it being Monday and all — but we were sorely mistaken. Instead we went to Crave, a place I'd been to for enjoyable brunches but not for dinner. I had this delicious halibut with ricotta gnocchi, corn, and asparagus while we chatted about possibly going to Puerto Rico at Christmas.

17 September 11

gluten-free birthday cake
Sarah had her birthday party at the house. Basically we just ate a lot of food and drank a lot of wine and talked too loud and people smoking cigarettes outside saw our neighbours having an argument in which they were throwing dishes at each other.

pumpkin blossoms
There are a lot of pumpkin blossoms, but only one pumpkin and it doesn't seem to be ripening :(

asparagus & oyster mushroom tartlet
Cookoff day, hooray! This is my asparagus and oyster mushroom tart, in spelt filo pastry with roasted garlic & applewood smoked salt cream cheese (the dots on the plate are hot sauce). As usual, you can check out the cookoff blog to see the rest of the entries as well as who won!

14 September 11

taking a bite
A house a few doors down from ours was being demolished, so lots of people were gathered in the alley to watch. I chose to watch from the street because I thought it would be more interesting to see things coming apart through the facade of the front. It's pretty amazing the skill and care that goes into something so destructive — obviously you can't just go in smashing things willy-nilly because you can't let debris hit the houses on either side. Tearing this roof away, he had to pull it upwards and backwards towards the lot. And I must say I enjoy the crunchy noise it made.

13 September 11

unwanted television
Riley used to have a tv pretty similar to this in his bedroom. We played a lot of Nintendo and Sega Master System on that bad boy.

11 September 11

window kittehs
I somehow ended up going to West Van to buy bras and produce and filo pastry, and had the most tremendous transit luck getting there. Jeff and I made burritos with leftover quinoa salad and watched Lolita.

Amanda on the Granville Bridge
I met up with Amanda and we had beers at Steamworks, and then lunch at La Taqueria. Briefly stopped into Payless and MAC and then walked over the Granville Bridge to go to the Granville Island Market and buy heirloom tomatoes. I came home with my delicious treasures and attempted to reproduce the tomato & quinoa salad we had at Chambar, and it turned out reasonably well.

Three self-portraits in a row. I am really boring lately.

Bedroom window self-portrait. I've been so unimpressed with what I've been shooting lately, I'm ashamed to even put it on flickr.

Jeff has begun the Thanksgiving planning. I especially like Tony's 'dietary restrictions'.

04 September 11

maxi skirt
One of the previous day's thrift store finds: a maxi skirt that doesn't make me look like a dwarf with no waist! I went to Steph's where she and Suz and I watched Robin Williams movies — Dead Poets Society, Good Morning Vietnam, and Hook.

Howe Sound, twilight
I found some good stuff at the thrift store during the day while Jeff was working, and after he got home we wanted to go somewhere for beer & food. We had a 2 for 1 coupon for Howe Sound Brewing, so we decided to just drive to Squamish. The brew pub was nice, the interior of it made me feel like I was on vacation. And of course the beer and food were good too.
On the way home we stopped at a lookout to take some photos in the twilight. I wanted to do night shots, too, but after it was fully dark we missed the next lookout point and it was too troublesome to turn around.

31 August 11

cardigan & sunglasses
Cool mornings, sunny afternoons.
I need to stop dumping my crap on the kitchen table immediately after coming home from work.

30 August 11

summer dinner
I stayed home from work because of my idiotically injured foot, and spent the day reading and cooking and baking. I made a blackberry crumble, as well as this dinner: tofu with the leftover cornmeal batter from the cookoff, marinated zucchini & red onion salad, and black beans & rice with peas & cilantro.

29 August 11

crispy fried tofu and fruit salsa
My entry for the local seasonal fruit cookoff (which was also gluten-free): nectarine, blueberry, and tomato salsa with cilantro & lime basil, served with chili-cornmeal crusted fried tofu. Please check out the cookoff blog to see the other entries and who won!

27 August 11

bike basket full of art
It was the day of the Papergirl ride-out, so I followed everyone with my camera as they stuffed their bags & bike baskets with rolls of artwork and handed it out to unsuspecting passers-by along the seawall. Some people were really excited, some were apprehensive, and some flat-out said no. It was great, though. Afterwards Jeff and I had some pizza and a beer at the Yaletown Brew Pub before riding home.

26 August 11

Tibetan jewellery
Jeff bought me these in Chinatown on our anniversary. Apparently they come from Tibet, and apparently they are real silver. Either way I enjoy them.

25 August 11

heirloom tomato & quinoa salad
Jeff and I spent the afternoon of our anniversary walking around Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Garden in Chinatown, and the evening eating and drinking too much at Chambar. I always enjoy how most of the time when I go to restaurants, I see at least one turnover of the tables nearby before we're ready to leave. Why are people always in such a hurry?

Above is an heirloom tomato and quinoa salad with peaches, pistachios, baby arugula, cilantro, and orange blossom vinaigrette. It was gone before the waiter came back to ask how it tastes.
A few more pictures are here.
