deck chairs & vines
Sarah and I went over to Chelsea's for haircuts and Sarah showed me how to use Hipstamatic properly so now I don't hate it as much.

upside-down chocolate brulée
Jeff made a chocolate upside-down crême brulée, which turned out more like an incredibly delicious mousse with caramelized sugar. It was served with cognac whipped cream and it was fantastic.

18 June 11

the ghosts of Christmas past
In the daytime Jeff and I met up with his mom for lunch at Acme Cafe, and then we went downtown to see what Granville Street was like. I took a lot of photos of the 'apology walls', but I haven't gotten around to doing anything with them. But if you're interested, you can watch a short video I made here.

The photo above was taken in Maple Ridge; after a small get-together with a group of high school friends at the Black Sheep Pub, a few of us headed down to the pier out of nostalgia and then we got enticed by the wonders of long exposures.
A couple more shots can be viewed here.

vegetables
Veggies chopped up for dinner: chopped for dinner: sautéed mushroom, onion, zucchini, garlic, tomato, and orange pepper in a tahini-miso sauce.

I totally creeped on this girl who was doing bus embroidery.

15 June 11

Round 4, game 7. The Canucks lost, like they tend to do. And appropriately, during the game, Steph's bathroom was exploding with the sink and bathtub drain contents of every other bathroom in her building. The roto-rooter guy was there for like three hours trying to get the black sludge out of the tub and toilet. Steph used every towel in the house on the sopping wet floor, and then decided it was better just to buy new towels than to try and wash them.

After we got tired of watching the Bruins kissing the Stanley Cup and giving interviews, we drowned our sorrows in ice cream and more beer and started watching So You Think You Can Dance, and all of a sudden it was interrupted with breaking news about the riots. It makes me so upset that a bunch of losers who just wanted to burn shit and bust windows are making a bad name for hockey fans and Vancouverites alike.

fava bean phyllo pockets
COOKOFF DAY FINALLY! We went two months without one so everyone was super excited about this one, themed around the bean. Above is Laryssa's entry, a portobello and fava bean-stuffed phyllo pastry with salsa and creamy white bean sauce. I made falafel with a spicy tahini sauce, which turned out surprisingly well considering I only figured out what I was doing a few hours before the cookoff.
Please do check out the rest of the photos and the list of categories and winners here on the cookoff blog :)

Leaving work early basically every day because it is so dead = potential adventures and no money with which to enjoy them.

12 June 11

brunch at my Mom's
Jeff and I went out to my Mom's to have brunch with them and my uncle Ken. The brunch was late and we drank a whole bunch of sangria, and then Jeff helped Jimm move a couch from Ken's to their place, so by that time we were like, "Well, we may as well just stay for dinner, too..." Afterwards we watched The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo on the On Demand and then came home.

11 June 11

maple leaves
Jeff and I had brunch at Mal & Kaylie's — last one of the summer — and then went hiking out at Pacific Spirit Park. The day turned out to be quite lovely after all and it was a nice easy hike; we got slightly lost but that gave us the opportunity to see a woodpecker right up close! Afterwards we had burgers at Sophie's on 4th and talked about dogs for like an hour, and then went and bought cupcakes to bring home.
A couple more photos here.

I went to Steph's to watch the game. We drank so much beer and then I came home.

high-waisted knickers
I bought some high-waisted underwear from a local Etsy seller because I have so many high-waisted shorts and skirts now.

Kaylie balancing on the railing
I went to Mal and Kaylie's to watch the game with them and some other people. The game was an abomination but we had a good time eating all the food and getting drunk on white sangria and some whiskey Ryan brought from San Francisco. We sat on the deck until we got cold and then we moved inside and played Apples to Apples.

pool
Jeff and I went hiking up in Capilano Canyon; it was quite majestic and somewhat arduous. Pictured here is Cable Pool, a calm point in the river where there are stairs down from the trail directly into the water so people can swim or fish.
A couple more photos here.

shadowed
Eric asked me to take some portraits of him for his birthday so he met up with me after work and we did a few in Gastown and a few at Portside Park. I posted my favourites here.
Afterwards we went to the Revel Room for some food and drinks; Aaron and Jeff later joined us. Eric went home and the rest of us moved on to The Diamond for another round of drinks before calling it a night.

we're gods
A hockey game happened and I went to Steph's to watch it. There is always such interesting stuff painted on the trash bins outside her building.
I did not take a photo on the 31st because I stayed home sick and basically wanted to die until around 3pm.

30 May 11

orange-mint chicken
Jeff worked the early shift so he cooked this nice dinner for us: orange-mint chicken, asparagus in orange butter sauce, and lemon-thyme finger potatoes. We also opened a bottle of wine we'd been saving from last year's Okanagan trip (a Dirty Laundry gewurztraminer).

sunlight over me no matter what I do
I didn't really do much of anything with my day. Edited some photos, went to the drugstore. You know how it is on Sundays sometimes.

28 May 11

poutine hash
Jeff and I met up with Amanda and Tim to have Canadian-style brunch at Mal & Kaylie's. I ate this delicious poutine hash. In the evening we went to Jeff's mom's place for dinner. It was a nice day and we sat on the deck drinking wine until it started to get dark.

23 May 11

It was a stat day so I didn't have to go to work, so I used the time to edit some photos and wash our mountain of laundry. In the evening I went to a clothes swap at Amanda & Laryssa's, and it was kind of ridiculous how much crap we all had! This is what it looked like after we'd all picked through it, so we packed it all up and walked it over to the Value Village. Then we sat on the floor eating popcorn and drinking tea and listening to old records.

22 May 11

Skagit River Brewing Co
This is outside the Skagit River Brewing Company in Mt. Vernon. We stopped there for lunch and a beer and then had to come back like an hour later because that's when Jeff realised he'd forgotten his laptop bag. Luckily it was still there. We waited like an hour and a half to cross the fucking border, but it was fantastic to sleep in our own bed again.

Punchbowl Falls II
Jeff and Sarah and I went on an 8ish-mile hike around Eagle Creek. We saw Punchbowl Falls (pictured above) from the water level as well — though we had to pick our way over slippery rocks in the river in order to do so (apparently in midsummer the water is much lower and you can just walk out peril-free for the view). This is from the trail above; a nice fellow let me use his tripod and polarizer to get this shot.
After being out for around four hours, we drove back, put our names on the list at Screen Door and then went home to clean up a bit and relax before going out for some of the best food of basically ever.

20 May 11

Waffle Window and Stumptown coffee
Sarah and Chase had to go to work obviously, since it was Friday, so Jeff and I walked down to the Waffle Window for breakfast. Mine had strawberries, pineapple panna cotta, rhubarb sauce, whipped cream and toasted coconut — and it was only $4! BEST DAY. After that we went downtown to spend many hours and dollars in Powell's, and we got Thai food from a cart and then walked around the university grounds a bit because it was so nice out. In the evening we went for dinner at a fantastic Cuban restaurant called Pambiche.

19 May 11

resting
We went back to Newport in the morning to check out the sea lions. There were probably six or seven of them sleeping or swimming around the dock there... last time Jeff and I were there we saw easily a dozen. After that we drove up the coast to Devil's Punchbowl State Park, a truly amazing erosional landform. We hung around until we got cold, and then continued on to Portland. Jeff and I separated from my family at this point, since we had planned to stay at Sarah and Chase's. While we waited for them to come home, we had a beer at Hall of Records and then watched all the dogs in Laurelhurst Park. After hauling all our crap into the house, we got dinner at the food carts and then met up with my parents and Alice for drinks at Teardrop downtown.
A few more photos here.

18 May 11

dangerous surf
We stopped at this danger beach so Jeff could chase waves and I could pick up rocks. We stopped again to play in the water in Crescent City, and spent the night in Newport. Had dinner at a really nice waterfront bistro that was kind enough to put the hockey game on for us.
