Cookoff day, pretty much the best day of the month. Above is Sarah's entry, a rosewater-pistachio ice cream in a waffle sandwich. I made a strawberry, basil, & jalapeño havarti grilled cheese and served it with my homemade ketchup. Although it didn't win, it was a big hit. Check out the blog to see the other entries and the winner!

My leg hurt a lot and I was getting paranoid thinking I had a blood clot, so I left work early to go see my doctor. She told me it was most likely my new work boots that were the culprit, and said it'd be ok if I took the rest of the day off. I got myself a veggie burger from the Kaboom Box downtown before heading home, and I hung out with Jeff a bit until he had to leave for work.
In the evening I made ketchup from scratch with balsamic vinegar as part of my cookoff entry.

Sarah and I went to four different grocery stores in various parts of the city, and then we met up with Maddie to catch the end of the rock & gem show at the Hastings Community Centre. We were all appropriately mesmerized, and I won a door prize so I choose a pretty cool geode. Jesse came by around the time Jeff came home from work and Steph also came to hang out, so we all got sushi and played a rousing game of Cards Against Humanity. Before bed Maddie shaved my head to help me extend the time period in between salon haircuts.

Liang invited me to an art opening at Gropp's Gallery in Mount Pleasant. Some of her friends had pieces in the show, so we had some wine and chatted with them a bit and then made our way to Commercial for a housewarming. Liang, being from Kits, told me it was off the Drive, so we went to Toby's (at 12th) to pick up liquor. Turns out the party was actually at Templeton and it was below Hastings, so it took us about half an hour to walk there. Ah well, it wasn't raining and it wasn't too cold either.
At the party someone had set up a blanket fort behind the couch and it was honestly one of the best ideas for a party I've ever seen. It gave introverts like me the chance to retreat from madness after a bit, and sit in a cool place with a few other people and just drink and chat quietly. It was lovely. We spent a good chunk of our party time in there and I quite enjoyed myself, and normally I'm very uncomfortable at parties where I don't know most of the people. I hardly remember anyone's name now, but that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy connecting with them at the time.

Jeff started on our first ever batch of homebrew... I came home from work and the whole house smelled of malt and the floor was sticky with beer. There was also some kind of carbonized goo all over the stove and I was informed our 16L stockpot is not big enough. But, somehow we got most of it into the carboy and into the basement, where it was to age for two weeks, and then another two weeks after bottling.

Met up with Liang in the evening for a burger and beers at the Yaletown Brew Pub. The Canucks lost to Columbus, so that was disappointing. It was nice to see Liang, as I hadn't since before Christmas. I like the beer and the food at the Brew Pub, but our waitress was kind of rude to us and didn't even say thank you when we paid up and with the homophobic vibe we were getting I kind of regretted tipping her as much as I did. We agreed that Yaletown is one of the few places in Vancouver where it's just hard to feel comfortable. We got catcalls when we kissed goodnight on Granville Street, though, which I suppose is better than hate speech.

It was a beautiful sunny day, so I called Laryssa to see if she wanted to meet for a burger & beer on the Drive. We went to the Charlatan and shared a burger, but after ordering beer we saw a tray of delicious-looking Caesars go by and couldn't resist... We managed to snag a spot on the patio and were joined shortly by Hayley (a third Caesar was procured). In the late afternoon, when it started to get cold and I regretted not wearing a jacket, I went home and watched the hockey game with Steph.
